The Types Of Broadband Connections Present

Broadband is a term that is used to refer to the internet with a high speed. It is the new type of tech which came up after early 2000 has and is much faster than the dial-up options, which are all in the past and rarely used. There are several high-speed options to connect to the internet such as:

  1. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
  2. Cable Modem
  3. Fiber
  4. Wireless
  5. Satellite
  6. Broadband over Powerlines (BPL)

The tech that you choose will only depend on you and your usage. Also depends on the location on which the user will want the connection to be installed. High-speed internet works best in urban areas well than the rural areas. Broadband internet usually comes with a bundle of different services like cable TV, phone, and streaming which depends on the company. For example, Xfinity offers Xfinity internet plans that can be bundled up with a mix of internet and TV services to relieve the hassle of managing and paying for two separate things, or as per your choice, there is a standalone option too. Likewise, many brands hold options to bundle up and create more valued offerings.  However, let us head onto the details of the types of connections we get to have under broadband.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

DSL is a wire-line type that is a form of transmission tech used to transfer data fast over the traditional telephone cables made from copper, which are installed in homes or offices. It has a wide range of speeds available from lower speeds of Kbps to Mbps (million bits per second) but does not hold the power to work Gbps (gigabit per second). The speed depends on your service location and whether the telephone company is near you or very far.

The DSL connection has two types being asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) AND symmetrical digital subscriber (SDSL).  ADSL is better for home surfers who receive a lot of data but do not send much back except for emails etc. There is more downstream data transfer than sending it for example voice calls, video, etc. While the other one is the opposite and is used more for business communication like for the video conferences, receiving and sending large chunks of data both up and down the stream. The HDSL and VDSL are high and very high-rate digital subscriber lines respectively used by large companies.

Cable Modem

A cable modem is a type of service that lets the operators of the cable provide broadband using the coaxial cables to deliver the TV content and sound but it helps to provide internet connection over the same cable. It is in most cases two connections one from the wall outlet and the other to a router/modem. At present time, these modems connect wirelessly to other devices like the phone, the internet of things, etc. It provides a speed of 1.5 Mbps or even more. There is no need for dial-up to ISP and the internet and TV can be used at the same time. Speeds may vary on locations and network strength.

Fiber

Fiber optic tech transforms the electrical signals, which carry data over light and send it into fiberglass which is transparent glass wire that refracts light. This wire is much like the average hair of a human being. Fiber carries data at rates much above present DSL or cable modem speeds, generally by dozens or even hundreds of megabits per second (Mbps).

However, the experienced speed may tend to vary due to location, configuration with the ISP. Great for streaming, VoIP like calls on WhatsApp, on-demand content. Its offering is limited to some areas until ISP expand service like normal cable modem etc.

Wireless

It connects the home and business with the help of a radio link that is a connection between the locations it is needed in the ISP facility. These signals are delivered over a long-range directional devices that work in uninhabited and sparse rural areas where other connections are hard to work with like DSL and modem. The requirement is of the external antenna. It has dedicated options for the home to keep them safe from hacks or in open public areas like coffee shops, hotels, and airports, etc.

It has become widely available with new tech in phone and usage over handheld devices that is thus provided by mobile wireless broadband services. With more and more people obtaining phones, this is needed but provides low speed in kbps.

Satellite

Satellites circling the Globe can offer broadband communications in the same way that they do for telephone and TV services. It is a type of wireless broadband that may potentially be used to serve rural or uninhabited locations.

Down and up the stream satellite broadband speeds are affected by a variety of factors, such as the provider and services bundle are chosen, the user’s line – of – sight to the orbiting satellite, and the weather conditions. The speed is slower than the DSL and cable services.

Broadband Over Power Line (BPL)

It is the transferring of the connection over the present low and middle-voltage electric power spread out network. The speeds are like DSL and cable modem. It is used for homes or offices using the electrical connections already present. It is new tech available in only some of the areas. Powerful connection due to power lines in high density than cable lines or DSL.
